Spring greetings! How are you? Are the flowers starting to bloom where you are? The jasmine on my front porch has blossomed, and the scent is so lovely. I keep telling my kids “this is what San Francisco smells like” because in my memories the jasmine is always in bloom in SF. (Perhaps someone can confirm?) We spent part of the school spring break in Belgium visiting friends who told us that there is a school holiday in Ghent called “Krokusvakantie” which means crocus vacation, in honor of when the crocuses bloom. I love the idea of a holiday in honor of flowers. Here in Texas, spring break could change to Bluebonnet Week, in May the East Coast could have Lilac Day, and then in August Austin could have an Esperanza or Plumbago Long Weekend. In fact, maybe each day of the week could have a flower assigned in the spring and summer. Magnolia Monday, Tulip Tuesday, Wisteria Wednesday, Thistle Thursday, Phlox Friday, Pansy Saturday, Sunflower Sunday. I’m open to suggestions!
In Weekend Mom news, tomorrow I’m going to be “in conversation” at the Books and Bees Festival! If you are local, please come by! It will be fun! There are some great kids events happening at the festival too!
Here is a Mom Milestones link if you want a copy!
After a meh 2024 in terms of reading, I am having a fantastic 2025 year in books.
These romance novels were all fabulous! I read all of Alexandra Vasti’s well-researched historical romances over spring break, and then read A Tropical Rebel gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera, which features a female doctor as the protagonist. Then I pivoted to present day Hollywood with How to End a Love Story which is romantic and steamy, but will also make you cry all the tears.
In terms of non-romance novels, I read Hazel Says No by Jessica Berger Gross, which comes out in June, and I loved it! It reminded me of a cross between Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld and Modern Lovers by Emma Straub. You can pre-order it now. I’m starting Saumya Dave’s new book The Guilt Pill which comes out Tuesday and is also available to order! Saumya is also a doctor mom!
Thanks for reading! I hope you have a nice weekend. Sending hugs!
Really love the idea of flower holidays! Let's make this a thing! I am just north of SF and jasmine is abundant right now, as well as lilac and wisteria. It smells amazing.
I love the idea of Tulip Tuesday - think I'll be celebrating that weekly from here on!
Have a great mom weekend. I will definitely be joining you in a trip to the bibliotheque and picking up a baguette!
I’m on board with Bluebonnet Week here in Texas. Let’s start the movement.
