Hi! Happy Mother’s Day Weekend! Hope you are doing well and enjoying May! It’s already quite summery here in Austin, which I love. I have a sentimental attachment to the feeling of getting into a hot car on a summer day. It brings me back to being eight years old and going to Deep Eddy (a pool here in Austin, and now… the name of a distillery?). I searched “mother” in my phone’s photo album, and uncovered a bunch of old Mother’s Day comics. These are all out of order, but it’s fun to look back (the first one is from 2018!). Indulge me?
This one was for Netflix Family, and I love the colors. The movie Wine Country was very fun too!
This follows the Mother’s Day adjacent theme, and is from the slime era.
Here’s one for Cup of Jo. Kind of a tearjerker! From 2021.
Here’s last year’s diary comic. I’m working at the hospital on Mother’s Day this year, but thinking about seeing a movie later in the day. No one wants to see Challengers with me!
Okay, okay, okay, let’s discuss recent media we’ve consumed.
I read the new Emily Henry book Funny Story (it was fun!), and finally, finally started The Idea of You movie last night. This adaptation feels very loyal to the book, but makes the main character more sympathetic, and less of a snob. For example, in the movie Solene drives a Subaru, which is absolutely not what she is driving in the book! (Maybe someone who has read it more recently can fact check this? In the book she frequently name-checks her designer bags and shoes, but the Solene in the movie seems to have a funkier, more independent aesthetic.) There are some great Weekend Mom outfits in the movie as well. I, personally, will be adopting Solene’s ‘Weekend Mom reluctantly attends Coachella’ look.
Speaking of book-to-screen adaptations with fantastic costumes, I’m still working my way through (savoring) One Day (so, so good), and counting the minutes until the new Bridgerton!
Finally, the new 2024-2025 calendar drops June 11! You can pre-order it now, if you want!
If you need more romance novel recs, I made a “storefront” on Amazon that does commissions. The links in this newsletter are from the storefront!
Okay, I hope you have a nice weekend, and that there is minimal slime involved in your Mother’s Day!
might take my kids to the flea market, might leave them at home so i can actually enjoy the flea market! (might have already demanded waking up to pastries in bed tho!!!!!)
Happy Mother’s Day from a fellow Austinite!! I just asked for a nap, a pedicure with a friend, and a picnic and hike with the family :)
