Congratulations on the npr review, and I’m so excited to learn there is a graphic medicine conference because that definitely feels like something that makes the world a better place. Thank you for doing all the work you do, Grace!! You make the world a better place.
Aw thanks Lindsay! It’s always such a neat, multidisciplinary conference—physicians, nurses, comics artists, chaplains, academics, librarians, social workers, medical interpreters, etc. Very grateful for it!
I've read a few extra good books this summer. The Infinite Sadness of Small Appliances was a delight! And How the Story Goes is a fun romcom, especially relatable to writers. I'm late to the Lily King party, but I was crying over Heart the Lover and didn't want it to end.
Every time you use SODOTO I add another feather to my cap :)
I need you to read my pal Laura Marie Meyers' THE MASH UP for the millennial vibes and nostalgia. The premise is like a reverse 13 Going on 30 where a 35-yr-old gets trapped in her teenage MASH game. Also, I feel like I need to tell you that there is a making out scene ON A BEAN BAG CHAIR. I have no idea how Laura sold me on it.
I REALLY enjoyed BIG SWISS and recommend it every chance I get. Also, read Natural Disaster by Lisa Owens! Just came out, wonderful funny fast delicious read about the most catastrophic day possible of young motherhood. Loved.
If you haven’t read Swimming Studies by Leanne Shapton, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was an Ann Patchett recommendation, and it is unlike any other book I’ve read, incorporating memoir, art, and photographs of the author’s own swimsuits.
I think everyone goes through a marvel phase, I did after my 2016 back surgery when my PT was always showing marvel movies. Now you need to start at the beginning (of which there are a few different ways to begin) with Ironman, one of the best.
Great post. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to having as a guest on the GraphicMEMOIRBlog once day!
Thank you! I would love to do this!
I can’t seem to DM you on Substack, so I’ve just sent you a message via the contact form on your website. I'd love to do an interview with you.

Ooh will you read Euphoria and Writers and Lovers now? Those are so good!
They’re on my list!

I love SODOTO the abbreviation 🥰
I will check that one out!
I love graphic novel memoirs, added to my goodreads!
